Daniel P. Brown's work did not arrive from nowhere. It grew out of a lineage: attachment theory, affect development, psychopathology, and the long clinical tradition of taking distress seriously enough to study it precisely. To build responsibly on that inheritance means going back to the source theories and meeting them on their own ground, rather than accepting them second-hand.
That is what this chapter is for. The Graduate Certificate in Human Behaviour is the formal return to the foundations: the epidemiology, the mechanisms, the competing paradigms, and the discipline of holding them in tension without letting any one of them be crowned the deeper cause. Two subjects are running this semester. Psychopathology takes the distress itself as its object. Psychology of Close Relationships takes the bonds within which distress is formed, carried, and sometimes repaired. Between them sits the whole question this venture exists to answer.
